You’re in the Navy now…. August 1, 2008

OK, so the song says ‘You’re in the Army now…’ So, I took some liberties. But, there’s a reason. I reported in for duty this morning and am now back on active duty.
Some how, it seems that I keep coming back to this state of affairs. I first left active duty in January 1988. Since then, I’ve been activated and discharged three times. The last time was for the Iraq invasion starting in January 2003 and ended at the end of June, 2003. This one is scheduled to last three years. I’m hoping I can find a way to stretch into at least four years because my son begins high school this fall and I would like to stay here long enough for him to finish. That consideration is a ways down the road, though.
Hopefully, I’ll just be a professor of physics that happens to be wearing a khaki uniform and has to salute everything that walks. Military leadership is always a part of any class, but my subject will be physics and I just need to stay focused on that.
A little queasiness about going on active duty aside, this looks like it is going to be a good job. The facilities are beautiful and I have a lovely office with a view of the Severn River emptying into Chesapeake Bay. The students are more dedicated here than at your typical civilian university. And, I’m hoping I can spend some serious time on my research.
All in all, I have to say, right now, life is very good and I’m going to work hard to keep it that way.
